International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia
Today, 17th May, is the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia. To draw attention to the fact that still today there are 76 countries who criminalize consensual same-sex relationships and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people everywhere continue to suffer violent attacks and discriminatory treatment, the UN Human Rights Office released a video with a strong message: “LGBT rights are human rights. Together we will build a world that is free and equal.” See the video here.
The European Parliament published an infographic today on the discrimination and harassment of the LGBT population in the European Union and Croatia. The infographic is based on a survey conducted by the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) and shows that people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) continue to experience widespread discrimination and harassment. A worrying fact is the percentage of LGBT people who have experienced or witnessed homophobic bullying at school.
“At least 60% personally experienced negative comments or conduct at school because they were LGBT while over 80% of all respondents in each LGBT group, and in every country, had witnessed negative comments or conduct because a schoolmate was perceived to be LGBT.”
