Is there room?

During this cold and snowy month OBESSU is moving on to the next topic of the campaign “Education, we have a problem!”: “Is there room?”. This topic deals with the challenges the educational systems face regarding disabilities, mental health issues and ways of learning.

It is important that everyone, no matter their health, can participate in education without being excluded. Why have we built so many staircases in schools, when they lead to exclusion of those in a wheelchair or with another psychical disability? Why do not all schools have school psychologists, when many suffer from stress, depressions and other problems?

Furthermore, the school system must acknowledge the need for variation of learning. We are all individuals and have different ways of learning. It is essential to understand that listening and reading are not the only ways to learn, but being psychically active, going on field trips and “learning by doing” are equally good ways to learn.

This month will contain interviews with different activists dealing with disabilities as well as investigations and solutions to how we can create a school system suitable for everyone.
