OBESSU attends Learning for Well-Being Consortium
On 27th February 2012, the Learning for Well-being Consortium of Foundations in Europe, in partnership with Eurochild, the European Foundation Centre and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation hosted the launch conference of the policy glossary Learning for Well-being: A Policy Priority for Children and Youth in Europe. Viviana Galli and Anna Widegren, OBESSU Secretary General and Project and Policy Officer, took part in the panel debate to talk about OBESSU’s point of view on the well-being glossary.
The question posed to the panel was ‘Projecting to the future: where do we want to be in 2030, and how do we get there’? Viviana Galli stressed that OBESSU puts students’ well-being at the forefront of its work by demanding safe, healthy and sustainable educational environments. Schools are the hubs of a community. Therefore, participation and democracy should be encouraged as vital elements in school life. Not only do these foster active citizenship and a feeling of ownership and thus interest, but a school community also mirrors wider society. OBESSU strongly believes that participation and democracy at school stimulate active participation of students outside of school and later in life.
Viviana Galli also stated that OBESSU sees education as a preparation for life in general, and not only as a path that leads to the employment market. It is important not to lose sight of the life-long and life-wide learning that starts at schools. OBESSU promotes a learner-centred approach to education and diverse methodologies to be used so as to cater for each and every individual student’s needs, thus helping every person find him/herself and what is best for them.
