OBESSU Council of Members & Extraordinary General Assembly 2014
From 29th to 30th of November 2014, more than 30 representatives from OBESSU’s Member and Candidate Organisations from 18 European countries, together with the OBESSU Board members and the Secretariat, gathered in Bratislava, Slovakia to participate in the OBESSU Council of Members & Extraordinary General Assembly (COMEM & ExGA). The COMEM & ExGA, together with the General Assembly held in Vienna in August, have been the most important decision-making spaces of 2014.
The two-day Statutory meeting, held at the University of Bratislava, started with an interesting update on the Board and Secretariat achievements and activities over the past 3 months, followed by a financial report from 2014 and budget 2015, presented by Rasmus Åberg, OBESSU’s Secretary General. Moreover, Elsa Lengeler took the floor to point out to delegates the future plans of the OBESSU Monitoring Committee.
Both in plenary and in the policy corners, delegates discussed and debates hot topics such as Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) and its possible implication on the European field of education and voted on amendments to the Statutes and Political Platform.
Furthermore, Member and Candidate Organisations took part in two parallel workshops: a debate on current school reforms at European level, similarities and differences between European countries; and a discussion on which are the essential elements to develop an effective and stable organisational structure. These activities led to reflect on the creation and future developments of the Member Organisations’ Forum, an online discussion platform (part of the OBESSU Workplan 2015-2017), aiming to improve the internal communication and to increase the exchange of ideas and knowledge between OBESSU’s Member and Candidate Organisations.
One of the highlights of the event was the adoption of an urgent resolution in solidarity and in support to the students, teachers and citizens of Mexico in their struggle for active citizenship and human rights, after the terrible events occurred in September 2014.
