Peer Learning Activity in Lisbon

From 2nd to 5th of May Sirius network, in cooperation with the High Commission for Migration of Portugal, organised a Peer Learning Activity in Lisbon. As a member of Sirius Network, OBESSU had a representative at this event – Milos, our Programme Coordinator. The High Commission for Migration of Portugal is investing a lot of efforts to improve the position of migrants so they have a national migrant support centre, together with many regional and local ones, where the event took place. The national centre is “one stop shop” for migrants which provides a number of government and support services under one roof with services directly provided by socio-cultural mediators who are usually themselves from a migrant background. 

In addition, the High Commission implements Choices programme (Programma Escolhas) which is very similar to our Seeds for integration programme. They are financing both GOs and NGOs to do the projects in which they involve migrants. In most of the cases GOs/NGOs are helping school students with homework and other school-related tasks, organise extra curricular activities (sports, music, art) and offer socio-psychological support.  

During the activity participants had the opportunity to visit two projects which High Commission is financially supporting through Choices programme and speak with project teams, their partners (it is obligatory to have them) but also young people who participate in those projects. Interviews were parallel so participants were divided in smaller groups – Milos’ group had the opportunity to speak with young people and tried to find out in which activities they participate in, how useful those activities are and what can be improved.

As a result, an activity report is going to be published. Deadline for having the report ready is September and participants from UK and Ireland are in charge of making the final version.
