On the 21st and 22nd July 2018 the Member, Candidate and Affiliate Organisations of OBESSU met in Bucharest for the annual General Assembly. 40 participants from 27 organisations gathered with the OBESSU Board and Secretariat to discuss the current state of the platform and its future developments.

Here we want to share with you some highlights of the event!

On the first day we…

Voted on welcoming a new Member Organisation to the OBESSU family!
Comité des Elèves Francophones (CEF) - the Belgian French-speaking school student union - joined OBESSU as a full member after a year and a half of candidacy. CEF was founded in November 2005 by secondary students from Liège (Belgium). These students shared the following common objectives: to tackle problems connected with secondary education; to develop democracy in schools; and to ‘open’ schools to society. We are very happy to welcome them to the family!

Approved the financial report, the budget and the Annual Financial Contribution
During the GA the Secretary General presented the financial report and balance for 2017 which was approved by members, together with the budget for 2019 and the Annual Financial Contribution by members scheme for 2019. Keeping the organisation informed and aware is at the core of our value of transparency, so get in touch to know more!

Hear a lot of reports!
The Board and the Monitoring Committee also gave reports and answered questions of the Memberships on their work, the way they are working towards the Implementation Plan 2018 and the Development Strategy. It’s been a busy year, as you can also read in our Annual report!

Approved a new Policy Paper on Quality VET!
Vocational Education and Training is at the core of OBESSU, therefore the VET working group has been working hard to create a new policy paper as a bases for our advocacy work. This has been adopted and we are now looking forward to seeing it in action!

Discussed the amendments to the Political Platform
Keeping our internal policy base up-to-date is very important to OBESSU and its member organisations. This year we discussed 21 amendments to the Political Platform and carried some of them, according to our voting rules. You will be able to read the modified version of the PP soon on this website

On the second day we..

Discussed and voted amendments on the Statutes
Our Statutes regulate OBESSU’s life and develop with the organisation: for this reason we voted upon 12 received amendments by the Board and the Member Organisations. A new version will be available soon

Hear report on our Working Groups
Currently OBESSU has 3 active working groups and one has just finished their mandate. These are: WG on VET, on Mental Health, on Global Citizen Education and on the Migrant Empowerment toolkit. To know more you can contact them through their email or emailing board@obessu.org. Let’s just say we were all enthusiastic about their job and very thankful for the work they do.

Elected 2 new Board Members
The elections of the Board were in the highlights of this GA. We had 5 candidates, who we want to thank for their involvement and passion, and elected 2 Board Members: Edvardas Vabuolas (LMS - Lithuania) and Giuseppe Lipari (RSM - Italy). The 3rd spot was not filled, therefore we will hold an Extraordinary General together with our Council of Members in November. Looking forward to receiving your nominations!

Elected the new Monitoring Committee
We also thanked the outgoing Monitoring Committee and thank Frederic, Agnesa and Peter for their work. We elected Jane Hayes Nally (ISSU - Ireland), Giacomo Zolezzi (UDS - Italy) and Larissa Nenning (former Board Member). We are sure they will do an amazing job in monitoring the work of OBESSU and its structure.

Thanked the outgoing Board Members…
We ended the General Assembly with a moment of thankfullness to our outgoing Board Members Ferre, Lasse and Larissa, who have done so much for the organisation in the past 2 years defending school students rights!

… and our hosts

We also need to thank our hosts from CNE who - despite all the difficulties and the demands from the OBESSU Secretariat - managed to gift us with the most majestic room we could wish for this GA.

Until next time!
