Between the 14th and 20th of July, participants from around Europe gathered in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, to take part in the #PeerPower OBESSU Summer School 2019. Hosted by our Bosnian organisation, ASuBiH, 27 participants from 16 organisations came together to take part in the Summer School and expand their knowledge in the field of Peer Education. The aim of the event was to educate peers on the potential of peer education to later implement it in the political platform of each School Students’ Union.
Participants were involved in different activities during the week, which underpinned to broaden the understanding of peer education in both theoretical and practical frameworks. The first day of the Summer School involved different sessions to break the boundaries between each other, as well as with the prep-team. Throughout different workshops, reflection groups and a simulation, participants worked on peer educational approaches in activities of school students, to experience new methods and new concepts and to ensure a better recognition and implementation of peer education in organisations.
Kévin, on behalf of our partner EPTO, facilitated different sessions on how to provide a space where young people can be learners and educators, sharing with their peers their competences in a spirit of collaboration.
On Wednesday, participants had the possibility to explore the beautiful city of Sarajevo together with the other participants as another form of bonding. During the evenings, they also had the chance to participate in different cultural activities and games to continue with the bonding.
María, on Thursday, facilitated a session about inclusive schools, where participants got to discuss the different points about the project, which aims to gradually shape school culture to foster long-term inclusion strategies. All these discussions kept going during the coffee breaks and in the free time, showing the high involvement and interest in this and other matters.
The Summer School ended with some tender moments! Participants gave each other a certificate together with an emotional speech! Presents, laughs and some tears to end this 2019 edition!
After this exciting week, we are certain that participants have taken valuable information and practices as an outcome of the Summer School which will then be implemented in their organisations.
And last, but not least, the event would have not had as much success if it had not been for the experienced and contributory prep-team: Sara Finnbogadóttir, as a former Board member, Edvardas Vabuolas as a Board member, Qendresa Ibrahimi and Michal Ostrý as trainers, and Aleksandar Nikolić from UNSS. And, special thanks to Kévin Haddad from EPTO and María Ballesteros from the Secretariat for your contribution in the different sessions during the Summer School, and Luka Ramljak from ASuBiH for hosting us, being very helpful and kind.
We also take this opportunity to thank all the people for their active participation and took part in the #PeerPower OBESSU Summer School 2019. Thank you very much for your commitment to school students’ unions! Until next time!
