School is so gay!
Conference on tackling homophobic and transphobic bullying in school.
On 20th February 2013, representatives of national ministries, European and global institutions and LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer) activists met at a Conference in Dublin, Ireland, to discuss the issue of homophobic and transphobic bullying in schools. Homophobic violence is sadly still present in our educational environments.
The goal of the Conference was to make the issue of homophobic and transphobic bullying visible, raise awareness amongst different players and stakeholders, and share best practices. Different speakers, for example Ruairi Quinn, the Irish Minister for Education, representatives from UNESCO and the Council of Europe as well as from Non-Govermental Organisations shared their expertise on the topic.
Gabi Calleja, Co-Chair of ILGA-Europe’s Executive Board, said: “There is significant research conducted and solid evidence of homophobic and transphobic bullying taking place all across Europe: at school, within the families, at work. The consequences are devastating for many young people and their families – social exclusion, isolation, drop-out, underachievement, mental and physical ill health, and in some cases self-harm and suicide.”
OBESSU stands for inclusive schools, including teaching material free from hetero norms and gender stereotypes. When it comes to combating homophobia in the classroom, it is important to give a positive spotlight towards the topic. Visibility gives security, not only in school books and other teaching material, but also in classes and representation. Throughout the Conference the importance of specific training for teachers, and the importance of school student councils were mentioned from different sides.
This Conference was organised by ILGA Europe in association with the Irish EU Presidency and was the first ever EU Conference on homophobic and transphobic bullying.
