UdS campaign: “Make school, not war”
Recently, the Syrian civil war has entered into the spotlight in the international debate due to the USA’s intention to launch a military strike Syria as a response to the use of chemical weapons against civilians on August 21st. Unione degli Studenti (UdS) believes that a foreign direct intervention in this civil war will result in an escalation of violence.
Moreover, a military intervention by the USA will escalate the critical situation of the Middle East, consequently putting civilians’ safety at risk. Therefore, to protect the population already suffering – UNHCR estimates 2 million of refugees after these two and half years of conflict – UdS is of the opinion that all social organisations that aim to realise peace through cooperation among people should call for a non-intervention policy.
Italian school students call for an EU foreign policy based on the principles of peace and self-determination. UdS thinks the EU should try to reach a political solution of the conflict aiming for the pacification of Syrian factions, not to the foreign countries’ interests in the region. To reach these targets, UdS will start a campaign aimed both to diffuse our battle against violence and to condition an EU foreign policy by raising awareness. “We must always follow our founding principles of peace, real freedom and respect for people, otherwise the European Union has no reason to exist.” – UdS
