OBESSU is very glad to introduce our new Affiliate Organisation: a big welcome to SV-Bildungswerk (SVB), an association of young people who support school student unions and councils in Germany. Affiliateship, as in the case of the Kosovar Youth Council (KYC), can be granted to an organisation that is willing to take part in OBESSU but does not meet the criteria for Candidacy. In Germany, decisions regarding education are in general made on a state (“Bundesland”) level. Therefore, each of the sixteen different states in the country has its own education system. There are only representative structures of school students on state level. This is the main reason why OBESSU cannot have a Candidate/Member Organisation from Germany.
SV-Bildungswerk (SVB), in English “Training Institution for School Student Unions and Participation”, was founded by a group of former members of school student councils and unions on state level. Now, SVB is an association working on national level and its main objective is to support and strengthen school student councils and unions and the participation of students in their schools.
SVB works to connect school students (10–18 years old, depending on the state) coming from different schools and organisations all over Germany, helping the transition of knowledge and experience from one generation to another. Mostly through workshops, SVB promotes democratic education, independent action of young people and empowers them to take responsibilities. Furthermore, they strongly encourage the participation of students in the development and design of their school systems.
One of the main projects SVB have organised and coordinated is a peer workshop system for school student councils and unions. It consists in a peer network of experienced young trainers called “SV-Berater*innen”, which facilitated about 25 workshops and seminars for school student activists all over Germany in 2014. Other projects that have been carried out by SVB aimed to support young people to implement and organise their own activities, with a particular focus on inclusion and democracy in youth organisations and eLearning.
One of the reasons SV-Bildungswerk wanted to become part of OBESSU it is to be involved in discussions concerning school students at European level, share best practices and learn from each other. They expect to have a fruitful cooperation with all the OBESSU Members, Candidates and Affiliates Organisations and they are sure everyone within OBESSU will benefit from it.
